Research themes

As a group we are currently working on the following areas of research:

  • Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences
  • Tipping points in the Earth system, especially the climate system and early warning methods for them
  • Revolutionary transformations of the Earth system, involving the coupled evolution of life and the planet
  • Deep Time Global Change
  • Ecosystem models, with an initial focus on the marine microbial biosphere. We are actively developing and using process-based models, spanning spatial scales from the sub-cellular components of marine plankton up to the whole planet, and capturing timescales from days to millions of years, which demands a nested hierarchy of models.
  • Fire and the Earth System
  • High-End cLimate Impacts and eXtremes (HELIX)
  • Research on Changes of Variability and Environmental Risk (ReCoVER)
  • SeaCURE: Seawater Carbon Unlocking and Removal
  • Greenhouse Gas Removal Feasibility of Afforestation and Biomass Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (FAB-GGR): A quantification of the global potential to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through reversing past forest degradation (The A.G. Leventis Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for Tom Powell)
