Overview

Jack Reed is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the ESRC-funded Nature Recovery and Regional Development (NaRReD) project. He is affiliated with the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) in Penryn and also works in the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP) in Exeter. 

Jack's previous research focused on the relationships between networked spaces, young people, and nature connectedness. In particular, his work has assessed how young people construct their understandings and interpretations of nature in spaces such as TikTok, Minecraft, and Netflix. In 2023, Jack completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh with a thesis titled "From virtual worlds to the Outward Bound Trust: A study of contemporary residential outdoor adventurous education in postdigital space". In the NaRReD project, Jack's research will collaboratively engage with councils in Britain's Leading Edge (BLE). The focus of this partnership is to measure and track the impact of nature recovery on local economies and scale this up for wider learning and policy development. Research

Research interests

Jack's research interests include nature recovery, regional development, and environmental sociology. In particular, how societal connections to nature may influence the development of regional and national nature recovery policies and practices. He also has research interests in postdigital theory and has contributed to postdigital considerations on the relationships between society, the environment, and technology. 

Having first published in late 2021, Jack has authored or co-authored nine journal articles, two editorials, and five book chapters. To date, the journal articles have been read over 31,000 times, informing policy and practice across a range of international contexts. Jack is open to invitations for collaboration, especially in areas of environmental sociology, youth cultures, and postdigital theory.
